How to Choose Laser Tattoo Removal in Austin
Austin has four kinds of places that do laser tattoo removal: removal-only chains and clinics, med spas, dermatology practices, and tattoo studios with a laser on site. The right one depends on your goal. If you want the tattoo gone, compare the technician, the laser, how prices are defined, and what a full plan costs. If you want new artwork over the old tattoo, a studio that does both the fading and the cover-up removes a handoff.
This guide explains what each type of provider is built for, the questions worth asking any of them, and when Pigment is not the right fit.
The four kinds of laser tattoo removal providers
- Removal-only chains and clinics. Removal is their whole business. Many sell multi-session or "unlimited" packages and offer financing. Good when you want full removal and a package price. Ask who treats you and how size tiers are defined.
- Med spas. Removal is one service among many aesthetic treatments. Treatment is often by a nurse practitioner, aesthetician, or laser technician, and pricing is frequently quoted at the consultation. Good when you already use a med spa you trust.
- Dermatology practices. Physician-led practices that also do laser removal. The right first stop if you have a skin condition, a history of scarring or keloids, a suspicious spot in or near the tattoo, or a medical question about the treatment area.
- Tattoo studios with an in-house laser. Removal and tattooing in one place. Good when the goal is fading for a cover-up, because the laser technician and the artist can plan around the same new design. Pigment is this type.
Seven questions to ask any provider
- Who will treat me, and what is their training or certification?
- Which laser do you use, and which wavelengths for the ink colors in my tattoo?
- How do you define your size tiers? Ask for square inches or a real-object comparison, not just "small."
- What would a full plan cost for my tattoo, not just one session?
- How far apart are sessions, and how do you decide when the skin is ready?
- What happens if my skin reacts, blisters, or changes color?
- Can I see before-and-after photos from this location, treated by this technician?
Starting prices are not comparable
A "starting at" price usually covers the smallest size a provider treats, often a tattoo of one or two square inches. Two providers with different size definitions can't be compared on that number alone. Ask what tier your tattoo falls into, then compare full-plan estimates.
Pigment publishes its prices by size, per treatment:
- Size 1 (about a postage stamp): $150–$175
- Size 2 (about a poker chip): $200–$250
- Size 3 (about a business card): $275–$325
- Size 4 (about the palm of your hand): $350–$400
- Size 5 (about a postcard): $400–$450
- Size 6 (about a half sleeve on the outer arm): $500–$600
Packages save 15% on three treatments or 20% on five, and active military receive 20% off. See the full laser removal pricing by tattoo size, including how package pricing works.
Per-session, package, or "unlimited" plan?
Providers in Austin price removal three ways. Paying per session gives you the most flexibility and the least commitment. Prepaid packages of three or five sessions lower the per-session price if you know you'll keep going. "Unlimited" or "complete removal" plans charge once for as many sessions as it takes, which can make sense for large, dense tattoos you want fully removed.
If you only want a tattoo faded enough for a cover-up, you will usually need fewer sessions than full removal, so paying per session or buying a small package is often the better value. Before you prepay anything, ask about refunds, transfers, and what happens if you stop early.
When a tattoo studio with a laser makes sense, and when it doesn't
A tattoo studio with a laser makes the most sense when the end goal is new artwork. The technician can fade only the parts of the old tattoo that would fight the new design, and the artist can tell you how light it needs to be. At Pigment, the laser technician and six tattoo artists work in the same studio, so that conversation happens in one place. Read more about laser fading before a cover-up.
It matters less if you want a tattoo fully removed and have no plans for new work. In that case, judge any provider on the technician, the laser, the pricing, and the plan.
Who should choose somewhere else
We would rather you end up in the right place. Another provider may suit you better if:
- You want the lowest possible per-session price.
- You want a single "unlimited" package price for full removal.
- You need Sunday, Monday, or evening appointments. Pigment is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 6pm.
- You have a skin condition or medical concern in the treatment area. Start with a dermatologist.
- You live closer to South Austin or Round Rock and the drive to Northwest Austin would make regular sessions hard.
Already in treatment somewhere else?
If you started removal with another provider, bring what you can to the consultation: how many sessions you've had, the dates, the laser used if you know it, and photos from before treatment and today. Mondo will look at how the tattoo has responded and talk through whether and how to continue.
